It was once said about diets that if you went to a casino and hit the roulette wheel on which instead of numbers there were diets, when you spin the wheel and you might get lucky. That is the problem with a lot of diets; they work for some people and not for others.

Our Biomet Kettlebell Programme combines a personalised diet with kettlebell training, and is designed to elevate your metabolism and keep it elevated long after you have finished your session so that you continue to burn large numbers of calories throughout the day.

The diet format we use is based on science – in fact it’s based on three types of science:

Body Typing recognises that not everyone is the same and people need different foods to help them lose weight in different ways and in different problem areas.

Metabolic Typing determines how you digest your food. There are fast, slow and mixed oxidisers (the speed at which food is digested).

The Alkaline/Acid Balance. Your body needs to be more alkaline than acid otherwise you end up storing more fat than you can lose.

This three-pronged approach ensures that we tackle your weightloss and problem areas on an individual basis to ensure that you lose weight safely and effectively, whilst at the same time educating you to make the right lifestyle changes that will help you to keep the weight off. Afterall, you should only ever have to do this once. With the right information about your own body and its requirements, you can look forward to a lifetime of good health and ideal weight.

Sign up now to come and do an introductory taster session. You will be given a greater understanding of how the programme will work for you. On completion of your session, you will be given your starter kit of the Bio and Metabolic typing questionnaires and your pH strips.

The programme includes 12 kettlebell sessions over 6 weeks as well as the diet kit and guidance.

Call 0845 226 5647 to book your introductory session now.

If you join some running clubs or sign up with a coach, the instruction is usually built around a training programme: how fast to run, how far, how often, but not how to run.

According to the Sports Injury Bulletin, about 60 – 65% of all runners are injured every year. The theory is, the more you run, the higher your chance of injury.

Running technique may be what it takes to join the one-third of runners who make it through the year injury-free. Like a golf swing, running technique has to be built around natural movement. Running technique can be critical, and it’s not just about maximising performance. The right biomechanics may be even more critical to avoiding injury than in other activities.

Lower your risk of injury and improve your running

1. Identify form issues you may be unaware of to radically improve your running form.

2. Learn the right drills for your physique so you can improve your running efficiency.

3. Run faster, longer or both with a better understanding of running biomechanics.

4. Learn to train in keeping with your ability and build better endurance.

5. Learn how to avoid overtraining and how to recover before your next running session.

6. Learn how to use heart rate training so that it is individualised to your recovery.

If you join in a yoga class, practice martial arts or take a swimming or tennis lesson, it’s almost all about technique, but most runners get very little instruction on how to run. We’ve all been running since we were toddlers, so why would we need a running lesson?

The most common mistakes, according to a number of different sources, are to strike your heels into the ground ahead of your centre of gravity, to lean backward when you run and to move your arms across your body.

A 60 minute video-recorded session, with small groups of up to ten people.

Fees per session £10.

The history of the Kettlebell is 2,700 years old, originating in ancient Greece with the Olympic athletes, and were called ‘halters’, made out of sand, stone or iron. The feats that these athletes could perform with these instruments would even rival some of the Olympic athletes’ performances of today as it has been recorded that from a standing jump for example, a distance of over 7m was achieved and javelin throwers of the time were throwing distances of over 95m.

The question then is, what did the ancient Greeks really know about halter/kettlebell training? One principal the ancient Greeks discovered was that working from the body’s centre of gravity had an altogether greater effect on all-round performance. The Greeks understood that by using the whole body at once, a greater benefit was achieved on the body in comparison to today’s mainstream approach of isolating muscles and working them individually. This is why kettlebells are fundamentally different to other forms of exercise, making them unique tools for today’s more health-conscious, awakened individuals.

The reason we at the Kettlebell Studio are so passionate about Kettlebelling is that it works the whole body at once; it’s a short half an hour session which our clients find easy to fit into their busy family and professional lives. We have over 220 exercises, enabling us never to repeat a programme thus making the sessions engaging and not boring. So why should you start training with a Kettlebell?

According to the American Council of Exercise (ACE) Kettlebell training is the most effective in burning calories, comparative only to uphill cross country skiing at a fast pace. Kettlebell training burns 20.2 calories a minute – which is “off the charts” according to John Porcari Ph.D of the University of Wisconsin who led the study into the efficacy of Kettlebell training. Therefore, in one short Kettlebell training session you burn over 600 calories, achieved through a combination of anaerobic and aerobic burn.

Still not convinced?

What’s so good about them?

When using a bell the weight is off-centre, which forces the body to use its core, decelerating and stabilising muscles more efficiently. This leads to more muscles being activated making your body fitter and stronger for every minute you have a bell in your hands. The centrifugal force that kettlebells create works muscles more completely than with traditional weights.

As a beginner one of the main kettlebell exercises used is called the Swing. It’s a squat with the bell being pulled like a pendulum from between your legs to an upright position at eye-line and down again. This simple exercise uses nearly all the bodies’ muscles. The idea is never to lift the bells as you would a barbell or dumbbell, but rather to let momentum do the work where the force comes from the hips and legs and not the arms. Momentum plays a very important role in kettlebell training.

Intro to the advanced class at The Kettlebell Studio

A Uniquely Effective way to Train

Functional science has identified that the body’s joints move in three directions: forward and back, side to side, and turning left and right. These are called ‘planes of movement’. It is now known that joint movement is responsible for muscle movement and not the other way around which was the old way of thinking. Therefore the muscles are reactive to what a joint is doing to make the muscles work. Dumbbells and weight machines only work in a single direction/plane, whereas kettlebells work in all three plains of movement and they work aerobically (cardio heart/lungs) and anaerobically (muscle system) at the same time.

To be fit in all three planes of movement is most important for lifestyle activity, because you’re dealing with motion in all directions—lifting and placing a heavy suitcase, gardening, playing with children, keeping a good posture at your desk at work. In day-to-day life you need an all-round fitness to lead a healthy life so that at the end of your day, no matter what it brings, you are not left fatigued.

Kettlebell training will leave you with a lean, athletic, powerful, and highly functional body. Plain and simple, it is the fastest way to change the shape of your body and enhance an active lifestyle.

Because kettlebells work the whole body at once, and burn over 600 calories in just half an hour, you only need short sessions to get great results. Our sessions last up to 30 minutes, so they are easily integrated into your day. We run classes, courses, small groups and personal one-to-one sessions morning to evening, from 6am until 9pm.

To know more and to experience a smidgen of what kettlebelling could do for you, book a free taster session at the Kettlebell Studio in Summertown, Oxford on 0844 332 0125 or complete this form:

We run a professional comprehensive personal coaching service at the Kettlebell Studio, which is based on years of experience in the field of coaching and kettlebell training. We work with people of all ages, from all backgrounds, with a varying level of fitness and health issues. Personal needs are thoroughly assessed and attended to, with programmes developed to suit you and your lifestyle.

Your first Personal Coaching session (or taster) is a two-part assessment

Part 1

Static Postural Assessment – starting from the foot up. Assessing any issues to be aware of and any possible action to be taken.

Gait Analysis – movement patterns and muscle alignment before exercising, using manipulation and possible massage.

Part 2

Introduction to the kettlebell and kettlebell training.

Heart Rate Monitoring.

The first session is designed to look at your readiness for exercising and safety, (part 1 takes 10 minutes to complete) providing there are no health or postural issues you will then move on to part 2. You will be given a heart rate monitor which uses the latest heart rate technology to measure your individual training effect.

Training criteria of subsequent sessions

All training is personalised to you on the day of your session. A training session lasts 30 minutes. Starting with a training benchmark at the start of your session we assess your readiness for exercise and this will determine the intensity of the session governed by your starting heart rate and taking into account any lifestyle factors that may have an effect on your heart rate. The benchmark heart rates are 128 – 138, using a standard kettlebell exercise which takes 30 seconds to complete. This helps us to establish the intensity of your personal session.

As a beginner you will start with a light kettlebell and after every fifth session as your kettlebell technique improves you will move up by weight or reps (exercise repetitions) or both. This is because stamina and strength improve after four sessions of kettlebell training.

Your programme design will be based on your goals and needs, however you will never do the same programme twice. This is firstly in order to challenge your body without increasing the exercise load to exhaust you, and secondly to motivate you so you know it’s always going to be different and fun.

Opting for Personal Coaching ensures intensive personal attention to your individual training requirements and quick results. If you would like to book a first training session please call 0844 332 0125 and get yourself into the diary for a taster session.
Minimise your risk of injury and get the most out of your ski holiday by specificity training with kettlebells.

We will help prepare your body for lengthy sessions on the slopes so you’ll feel the need to take fewer rest-stops and Glüwein breaks, and you will experience less muscle fatigue, aches and pains on the first few days of skiiing that we’re all so familiar with (and dread!)

Individual Ski Fitness Sessions £25.00; 2 – 5 people £15.00 per person.

Tai Chi has its origins in ancient China. It works on the Yin and Yang energy systems of the body which is called Chi. Tai Chi has become popular in the West because it combines meditation with movement. Unlike most forms of Yoga, Tai Chi movements are easier to perform, have a shorter learning curve and are focused on enhancing and energizing the body from an internal and mental perspective.

Chi Bell™ improves whole body health and vitality through the integration of Eastern and Western exercise methods. Chi Bell™ exercises work through the body’s system of meridians (meridians are the body’s energy pathways which when blocked can cause a person to become vulnerable to ill health). The meridians help the flow of life energy around the body. There are two forms of energy, Yin and Yang. Yin meridians flow upward through the body and Yang meridians have a downward flow through the body.

Chi Bell™ exercises correspond to the twelve primary meridians of the body: the kidneys, liver, spleen, heart, lungs, pericardium, bladder, gall bladder, stomach, small and large intestines, and the triple burner (body temperature regulator). These meridians are symmetrical on the right and left sides of the body, and they all interconnected with one another.

Restoring the balance of your energies is the ultimate goal in improving overall health and well being with Chi Bell™.

Complementary practitioners (acupuncturists, Chinese herbalists, massage therapists, etc) assist clients in repairing dysfunctioning areas within their meridian systems to restore a natural balance of Chi. Chi Bell™ uses light kettlebells that help you to tap into these energy fields very effectively, to open up the meridian pathways and thus to strengthen the flow of Chi and release negative energies and stress, helping you to rebalance your body’s energy.

The kettlebells utilise ground forces representing the upward Yin energy, and gravity representing the downward Yang energy. Chi Bell™ is a highly fluid exercise system that synchronizes the mind, body, and breath in a moving meditation to exert balance and influence the whole body.
